We all experience times when we get in our own way. Sometimes it’s in small ways and other times it’s pretty major.  We can end up being far too much in our own head, often letting our past dictate the present and our “What if’s” the future.

When we experience chronic symptoms often it’s the way we think about things that keeps us stuck.  That’s not surprising when 90% of the present moment is informed by the past (Cozolino, 2018).   You might be very aware of what triggers you.  Or maybe you don’t know why you get triggered but it happens, again and again.  You might hear, see, feel, taste or smell something and it’s like you’re right back in time again – as if you’re experiencing that triggering event, situation or relationship all over again.

What about limiting thoughts?  We all know that voice – it’s our “Inner Gremlin” – and it’s very good at stopping us from moving forward.  Our brain believes what it hears, which can result in the same unhelpful behaviors day after day.  That’s the loop, hoping tomorrow will be different – that we’ll do better – but it never happens.  We end up feeling that somehow we’re failing, and not strong enough, and so the loop continues.

What do we typically do?  We continue to try to get through the day hoping that each new day will be different.  However, we can’t experience a different outcome if nothing we do changes.  Sometimes we turn to food, drugs, and/or alcohol as a way of avoiding what we’re feeling and as a way of self-soothing.  We might also try to distract by becoming super busy or by getting obsessive about things.  If we’re concerned enough we turn to a therapist or doctor for help.  Talking and medication may help us in the short term but do either teach us new skills so we learn how to move forward?

Now, thanks to the field of Neuroscience, our understanding of the brain is changing fast.  We now have a set of innovative and rapidly effective techniques for working with trauma, negative emotions, limiting thoughts and unhelpful behaviors.   In addition, we have great tools for helping the brain establish new neuro pathways, and connections – helping us to think differently and successfully change our behaviors.  And the best news is we can put these skills to use in our everyday life.
